Westmeston, Sussex, England
This welcoming cottage has been lovingly restored with great attention to detail and retains many of its Victorian period features such as the original fireplaces in both bedrooms. On the ground floor is the spacious, tastefully decorated sitting room with its cosy wood burning stove for those cooler winter evenings. French doors open onto the secluded garden, which has two terraces to relax and unwind in the summer sunshine. There is an open-plan dining area and a country style kitchen with an electric Aga, along with a breakfast table with bench seating. Both bedrooms can be found upstairs on the first floor. Bedroom one features a king-size bed and has lovely views onto the south-east facing garden and to the church beyond. Completing the room is the integrated en-suite facilities with a free-standing, claw-foot bath, wash basin and a separate WC. The second bedroom has a super-king size bed and a large wardrobe with plenty of storage space. In addition, there is a family shower room with a spacious walk-in shower. Set in the centre of the ancient village of Westmeston at the foot of the South Downs, 1 Church Cottages is perfectly positioned for exploring the beautiful rural landscape of East Sussex. The south coast is only 30 minutes' drive away with beaches at Brighton, Saltdean and Seaford. The local area has many picturesque walks to discover. A real highlight for guests is bound to be the footpath from the front of the house that leads directly to The Downs. There are also two excellent pubs within 2 miles walking distance of the cottage, as well as an abundance of cafés, pubs and restaurants a little further afield in Lewes (6 miles) and Brighton (7½ miles). Lovely atmosphere in the cottage, tastefully furnished and lovely welcome pack of goodies on arrival
Beautifully equipped cottage in a great location with a walk from the front door up to Ditchling beacon, perfect for our dogs’ morning walk. The cottage is really comfortable and has a lovely garden (sadly we had terrible weather and couldn’t use it!). Super helpful owner and I would thoroughly recommend staying here
Wonderful stay in a gorgeous super-comfy cottage in a beautiful spot at the foot of the South Downs. The cottage was very well equipped and the beds very comfortable. Lovely walks from the front door on to the South Downs, or Ditchling, for example, and Brighton and Lewes are just on the doorstep. It really is a lovely place to stay and the village is pretty and quiet, despite being well connected. We hope to be back soon!
Light weight summer duvets would be really useful. We used the outer duvet cover then a towel each! Some espresso cups would be great too.
Beautiful cottage, very well equipped and we loved the garden!
It is a beautifully renovated cottage with a good blend of facilities to meet modern needs in bathroom, kitchen and heating whilst maintaining the cottage 'fee'l in some of the original fittings and the shabby shic furniture. The owner was exceedingly helpful for the odd thing we couldn't find or work out (usually our fault). Despite rather cold damp weather we enjoyed our stay.
Such a wonderful location, but with the added luxury of a fantastic, well appointed cottage. Without doubt, one of the best we’ve ever stayed in
Very comfortable and cosy cottage. Lovely Aga, loads of hot water and Liz and Steve were lovely hosts
Lovely cosy cottage. Perfectly equipped kitchen. Very comfortable beds. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Lovely cottage that makes you feel you are in the country - but still close to everything! Very comfortable and loved the aga! Welcome hamper was great and the cake was fantastic!
Very nice cottage. Only small complaints: steep stairs difficult as I have arthritis. Also bed very creaky!
A pretty, quintessentially English country cottage, perfect for our stay to visit family in the area with everything we needed. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely return in the future next time we are visiting family. Just one small recommendation - we were out for 2 of the 3 nights we were there so it didn’t really matter but had we been in each evening, a slightly bigger tv with a better picture quality would have been nice as the reception and sound quality was poor.
The cottage was wonderful. It was comfortable, clean and very welcoming. Loved the location next to the Downs. Had a very relaxing stay.
Lovely Cottage in every way. Great location for walks directly from the Cottage. We spent a week here with our 2 dogs. Can highly recommend both the pubs in Ditchling. We will definitely return. The owners Liz and Steve were perfect hosts and very kind indeed.
Such a beautiful cottage in a fantastic location. It felt so homely and was delightfully warm. The welcome hamper was a lovely surprise too!
Lovely cottage in convenient location and beautifully presented
A lovely cottage. Very comfortable. All the essentials there. Nice walks and days out. Lovely garden. Aga interesting to use! Lovely toiletries. Good communication with owner. Only downside for us was very small TV to watch tennis.
Lovely cottage and great welcoming pack.
Wonderful in every way! Wholesome stay.
A gorgeous cottage in comfortable distance from Gatwick, close to many beautiful villages and the fantastic coastline of East Sussex.
To Liz and Steve. Thank you so much for a beautiful stay in your lovely cottage! We felt it was a home from home and was exactly what we needed!! Thank you so much for the lovely welcome pack full of goodies felt like Christmas!! It is ever so clean and homely with the most beautiful touches, not to mention the towels and dressing gown smelt beautiful. Thank you so much.
Liz and Steve . We have thoroughly enjoyed our few days in your beautiful cottage ( not long enough) it's in a superb location, gave us the peace and tranquillity we needed. Thank you for the welcome back, much appreciated. You have thought of everything and loved all the little touches which made it feel so homely, especially the Christmas Tree, lights and flowers.
To Liz and Steve. Thank you for a wonderful stay in your fabulous cottage. Four days have flown by. We appreciated the luxuries and the hamper on arrival. We have walked to the Ditchling Beacon and the pub, plus wine tasting and a visit to the South Weald and Downland Living Museum - so we have been busy but knew we had a comfy home to return to. Hope to be back.
To Liz and family. Thank you so very much for letting us stay at your cottage and Garden Room. We absolutely loved it! We went to the pub " The Bull" it was great. A small half hour walk and fab food! We will see you again very very soon, we cannot wait to come back (hopefully around Christmas time).
Thank you for a lovely few days! We all had a great time and even though there was a lot of rain the sun came out sometimes too! If anyone finds the footpath to the left of the cottage too steep it is a 3-minute drive up to Ditchling Beacon and there is a car park (£3 all day or free for NT members) and can walk along the top on the flat. Lots of love.
Thanks for a most enjoyable and relaxing few days in your lovely cottage. We appreciate the care you have taken to make your guests feel comfortable. The location under the South Downs is of course idyllic. We are only 75 minutes from home but it feels like a different world.
Very enjoyable week in house and Garden Room. Great walks along the Bluebell Walk. Days out to Brighton and Saltdean, both dog friendly. Middle Farm near Lewes has very good butchery, cheese room, veg and cider barn. Sad to be leaving this lovely house.
We had a lovely weekend, helped by the perfect weather ! House was lovely and had everything we needed, food and treats were a lovely touch. Walk up to the South Downs was great for dogs just out of the house and you are there! Hope to come back.
" We have had a great five day break here - blessed with fine weather to enjoy the wonderful surroundings of this lovely house and garden. Would particularly recommend a visit to The Ginger Fox. We went there twice in two days. Also had a great day out at Brighton Racecourse enriching the local bookies (sadly!). Hope to come again one day," Miles, Kate, Gemma and Shirley Robinson.
" We have thoroughly enjoyed out stay is this fabulous cottage. Thank you for all the lovely touches such as gorgeous sweet peas from the garden. We have enjoyed trips to Brighton, Lewes and a wonderful dinner at The Ram at Firle. Thank you for everything.
Sadly, coming to the end of our four fabulous days at 1 Church Cottages and Garden Room. The accommodation is lovely and the extra touches of the welcome pack/toiletries very much appreciated. An added bonus was being able to bring our three small furry companions with us who loved exploring the garden. We will certainly be recommending to friends wanting to visit the area. Thank you.
We have had such a super time staying in this wonderful cottage. Everything about it is just lovely. Thank you to Liz and Steve for being such lovely hosts. The bunk-beds were an excellent bonus too. We will return.
"Well done our Landlords - brilliantly appointed houses - loved the hot tub and roses, the gardens, all the nice little touches inside and the very generous welcome package including the delicious home-made cake. This was a great place for our last family holiday before I become a Grandpa !!
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Sussex. The accommodation was what we expected and more. The welcome hamper was very generous and the cake lovely. We rented both properties which worked so well for our family. Time together to eat and socialise but also our own space when wanted. We enjoyed eating and wine tasting at Ridgeview and Arundel was lovely. The Seven Sisters was undulating but the stunning views were worth the effort. Thank you for providing a very comfortable base for our lovely holiday.
We have had a wonderful stay in Number 1 Church Cottages. the cottage is warm, cosy and so comfortable. The decor is beautiful making it calm and peaceful. It has been a fabulous base from which to explore East Sussex. we have really appreciated all the special touches from the delicious welcome basked, home-made cake & white Company toiletries. Thanks so much Steve & Liz.
We had a wonderful week's stay at 1 Church Cottage and don't want to go home! The cottage is wonderfully thought out with all the little extras you could possible need - and the cake was delicious! It is perfectly situated for some lovely family days out and a relaxing home to come back to after a busy day. thank you for a lovely week.
